Why is black pepper added to turmeric?

Black pepper is added to turmeric because it contains piperine, a compound that significantly supports the absorption of curcuminoids, including curcumin itself. Curcuminoids have low bioavailability due to rapid metabolism and poor intestinal absorption. Piperine inhibits certain liver enzymes that break down turmeric, enhancing its absorption by up to 2000% (Hatab et al., 2019). This combination enhances turmeric’s effects.
