Sambucus nigra is a species of the Adoxaceae family. It is native to Europe, northwest Africa, southwest Asia, and western North America. It is quite common and widespread in California and is most commonly called Black Elderberry. Its fruit is a dark purple to black berry 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter, produced in drooping clusters in late fall, and is an important food for many frugivorous birds.
